8. The Fly dir. by David Cronenberg (1986)
Now this is a movie about gene splicing that I can get into (see my Splice review). Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) woos Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) by showing her his latest and greatest invention: a matter transporter. Life is great for awhile as Veronica begins writing a book on Seth’s transporter and Seth works all the kinks out of his telepods - turning a couple of baboons inside out in the process. But when Seth gets impatient and tries to transport himself between the telepods, his genes are spliced with that of a common housefly that found it’s way into the pod with him.
I haven’t seen the original The Fly yet, so I’m not going to compare the two, but this is a typical Cronenberg gross-out film. Goldblum is great as Seth Brundle, playing an eccentric, yet genius scientist (a la Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park) turned “Brundlefly”. Geena Davis is just as good as the enamored and later confused girlfriend. Not much more to say about this one, and most of you have already seen it. Still, a great Halloween watch.
