11. Gate II: The Trespassers dir. by Tibor Takács (1992)
Gate II is a strange little film. It’s the sequel the 1987 classic The Gate (a movie you should all watch), but was released in the US five years later. Apparently, reception of the film wasn’t that great, mostly because it’s not a very good movie, but at the very least there should have been a Gate sequel released shortly after the ‘87 original, allowing this movie to ride out of obscurity on the originals coattails.
Gate II takes place five years after the events in The Gate where Glen discovered the gates of hell in his backyard. Glen’s since moved out of his house leaving hell unguarded. So it’s up to Terry, his best friend from the first film, to watch over things.
Terry’s even more of a geek now than he was in the first film. Oh, and he’s a Satanist or Demonologist or something, too. After Terry’s mom died, his dad became an alcoholic and was forced out of his position as an airline pilot. Terry, along with a couple of local bullies, summons open the gates of hell in an attempt to have his wish granted - that his dad will get back on his feet and they’ll have a normal family again.
Of course, they wish for too much stuff and the world almost collapses on itself. Only pick up this film if you’ve already seen The Gate and are just curious about where that world went after the first film. Also, Pamela Adlon has a starring role in this film. You might know her from Lucky Louie, Californication, Louie, or the insane amount of voice-acting work that she does (most notably, King of the Hill).
