14. Homicidal dir. by William Castle (1961)
“There will be a special FRIGHT BREAK during the showing of Homicidal. All those too timid to take the climax will be welcomed to the COWARD’S CORNER!”
Under the alias Miriam Webster (yep, Miriam Webster), Emily hits up a bellboy at a local hotel with a marriage proposal. The catch, he gets one-thousand dollars and the marriage will be annulled immediately. “That’s cool,” he says, but in whatever way they said something like that in 1961. So they run off in the middle of the night to get married.
A preacher agrees to marry them for an increased fee in the wee AM hours. Upon saying, “I do,” Miriam Webster murders the preacher and high tails it out of there. Thus begins the mystery of Homicidal. That is, until ADR and makeup work kind of ruin the ending for you early on.
Luckily, we’re afforded a 45-second “Fright Break” - in case we’re too terrified to discover the bone-chilling secret that is Homicidal’s conclusion.
Hot tip: It’s neither bone-chilling nor secretive.
