Hey movie nuts! Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and John Carpenter’s The Thing Blu-ray discs are both under $10.00 right now Amazon. Both films have pretty incredible transfers and are well worth the Blu-ray upgrade. I got mine. Get yours.
[Disclaimer: we’re not getting anything from this, but you’ll get one or two awesome movies on the cheap! Not sure how long the price will stay.]

Counter Cinema Ep. 2 - “Alice in Wonderland”

In episode 2 of Counter Cinema, Pete and Dan discuss Tim Burton’s blockbuster Alice in Wonderland, are wrong about Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon, and briefly riff on Duncan Jones’ sci-fi indy flick Moon.

This is the new short film from Ridley Scott’s protege, Carl Erik Rinsch, entitled “The Gift”. Rinsch has largely done commercial work, and this little film is no different - if you couldn’t tell by the videos frame, it’s an advertisement for Philips upcoming Cinema 21:9 (2:39:1) displays.

The little film itself looks great - and I can’t wait to see Rinsch jump out of his commercial space and into feature films - but my main interest here is this new set. Obviously, it’s not a display that you’ll be watching TV or playing videogames on. And many movies won’t take advantage of it’s wide frame, but doesn’t it look beautiful?

I really want to see a live example of the Ambilight Spectra 3 technology (or something similar) that’s used in this video. “What the hell is that,” you say? Watch the video and you’ll notice the lighting effect that emits from behind the TV. The set emits an LED powered backlight on the surface behind the set that matches the color in the frame of the screen. Supposedly it makes watching movies in a dark room much easier on the eyes and is actually the opposite of distracting.

I’ve been wanting to play around with building some kind of Arduino based Ambilight device to setup behind my Panasonic TH-42PZ800U Plasma display, but don’t know how to code for Arduino and haven’t found a really great solution yet (this is the closest).

So has anyone had any experience with a set that uses Ambilight tech? What do you think?

Counter Cinema Ep. 1 - Edge of Darkness

The first episode of Counter Cinema is up! This one’s a bit rushed, what with Dan, Hunter, and I being working folk, but it’s a look at things to come. Consider this the pilot episode - with a full season ahead if it’s popular.

Didn’t completely hate this video? Take a second and recommend us for the Film directory on tumblr. Thanks!

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Promises, promises! We’re trying our damndest to get the first episode up by the end of the day tomorrow - and will be slicing together episode 2 in the near future. In the mean time, take a listen to the new Counter Cinema theme song! By me, Pete!
